In the last few years, CMO has even established itself as the world's leading supplier of large-size LCD TV panels. CMO has continued to invest aggressively in next-generation FAB planning, and uses state of-the-art automation to improve safety and process control.


The procedure used to produce a TFT-LCD requires various chemical gases (such as HF), most of which are poisonous. Since the gases pose a serious danger to factory workers, the gas monitoring site must be separate from the manufacturing fields, and be highly automated and reliable. The goal of this upgrade is to create a complete manufacturing process that is integrated with an open communication network for remote monitoring. The communication network is very important since it is used by virtually everyone in the factory.


System Description

The solution uses distributed-installed PLCs in the wastewater treatment system to collect information. For unmanned operation, devices must provide many hours of trouble-free operation. Using the existing PLCs allowed the customer to save significantly on the implementation costs of the new monitoring system, without losing any capability or reliability. Furthermore, since devices are used in harsh environments, it is essential to use products that have a rugged design and offer high reliability.


PLC control systems offer an effective way of setting up a gas monitoring system. Under normal circumstances, data collected by the PLCs is available for engineers. However, when abnormalities occur, such as the unplanned release of gases, the system will provide emergency notification. In general, scanners are installed in steel cylinders that can detect chemical gases. When poisonous gas is detected, the steel cylinders are locked, and an alarm message is relayed back to engineers through the PLC. The procedure takes only a millisecond. In this case, the PLC plays the role of controller and collector for the system.


However, how do engineers located at different sites keep track of the situation? The first requirement is a reliable communication network. In this case, engineers used the Moxa ED6008-MM-SC to set up a multi-mode fiber backbone to cover the long distance requirements of the control layer network, and used the fast redundant Ethernet ring function to enhance the reliability of the network. In addition, the rugged design of the Moxa ED6008-MM-SC satisfied the harsh environment operation requirements. The fanless design and redundant power DC inputs ensure a long MTBF rating.
