The Xuefeng Steel plant in Wuxi, China, recently upgraded monitoring and control system of its primary steelmaking processes which revolve around blast furnaces, hot stoves and a raw materials site. With the demand for steel in China experiencing dramatic growth, there is increasing competitiveness among all steel mills in terms of profitability, production costs, and quality of steel produced. The upgrade was a way for Xuefeng Steel to centralize monitoring and control of processes, put in place a faster and more reliable fiber network infrastructure and improve monitoring and control of processes that directly affect steel quality.


The Xuefeng Steel plant's blast furnaces and hot stoves typically run 24/7 for long periods of time and involve extremely harsh operating conditions with molten steel, corrosive chemicals and strong electromagnetic interference present. So reliability and redundant operation were critical to minimizing downtime. Furthermore, the Xuefeng plant required long transmission capabilities, with average distances between sites measuring more than 200 meters and the raw material site more than 500 meters away from the main refinery sites. Additionally, any new system had to be economical to install, operate and manage, plus support the original investment in the PLC control system and allow for future expansion.


System Description

In order to have better control and monitoring over the steel plant, Xuefeng Steel chose the Moxa ED6008-MM-SC Industrial Ethernet Switch for its small size, high port density, true plug-and-play replacement, overall low cost, and Moxa's Turbo Ring feature that allowed the Xuefeng plant to connect all blast furnace sites with a reliable fiberbased redundant ring connection with the ability to recover the Ethernet Redundant Ring in 300 ms or less. Additionally, the ED6008-MM-SC is easy to configure and manage as well as includes an auto e-mail warning function that allows the ED6008-MM-SC to send real-time e-mail messages and relay output alarms to operators and managers. The ED6008-MM-SC provides the required harsh environment capability including the high MTBF, the ability to operate in -40°C to 75°C temperatures if needed, plus redundant, dual 24 VDC power inputs that can be connected to live DC power sources. Xuefeng also applied Moxa's IMC-101-M-SC Ethernet to fiber media converter used to connect the network between the ring topology of the main blast furnace sites with the raw material site more than 500 meters away.


With the new Ethernet network support, the Xuefeng plant added a fast and reliable fiber network that covered the entire plant site, dramatically improved data and signal collection capability that complemented their existing PLC control system. The ability to efficiently collect data and signals from different places in the process gave system controllers and operators greater ability to monitor and quickly adjust process parameters than their previous monitoring and control system allowed. This was most apparent in the efficiency gains realized in the blast furnace/hot stove control systems that are the heart of quality control for any steelmaking process. With the ability to more accurately collect and monitor the temperature and pressure fluctuations as well as flow rates of raw materials and gases, increases in product consistency and quality were realized at the Xuefeng plant. Moxa's ED6008-MM-SC with Turbo-Ring support provided the performance, features, reliability and scalability the Xuefeng plant needed to take the next step in their plant automation needs.
