Varco's new Amphion Technology-based control systems rely on proven Internet technologies, and use reliable and deterministic Ethernet communications. The Amphion Technology-based systems are designed to expand small systems to larger ones, but without re-engineering the network topology for each system configuration. Traditionally, increasing the functionality of drilling equipment required complicated controls. What Amphion did changed the paradigm by providing a simple, yet powerful system that is both compact and cost-effective. The new Amphion Technology-based control systems completely integrate SCADA-based drilling control technology over an Ethernet network to provide ergonomic, effective, and safe control of modern drilling rigs.


System Description

Varco International designs drilling equipment in the form of high-availability systems that centralize the monitoring, command, and management of automated drilling. The equipment provided by Varco, partner companies, and third parties can be used to create an efficient drilling operation environment. Operators are allowed to manage the rig's drilling processes from ergonomically designed Driller/Assistant Driller workstation consoles that are equipped with a combination of touchscreen terminals, console-based control switches, and joysticks.


The surface equipment control system is configured to communicate with and control the operation of the various machines that comprise the drilling system. Each cabinet of the system contains several ED6008-MM-SC Ethernet switches for communicating from switch to switch, and for delivering control messages to local devices. For this reason, every component of the system is daisy chained into a ring topology with fiber connections in every component cabinet. The communication network makes the real-time operation and response of the oil and gas drilling system a reality. For example, the control system transmits control signals and receives feedback to adjust and maintain drill rpm, the mud pump adjusts the flow of drilling mud through the system, and other factors such as weight-on-bit and torque are measured. The surface control system can communicate with and control other surface machines that affect operations both above ground and in the drill hole.


High-availability is made possible by several redundancy techniques, and the use of fault tolerant components. Also supporting this strategy is the robust and reliable network formed by Moxa's ED6008-MMSC redundant Ethernet switches, which interconnect industrial-grade computers, and a redundant/hot fail-safe PLC system that integrates Operator Workstation consoles with the rig's drilling control systems. The redundant architecture and use of fault tolerant components ensure that this system is available and ready to work whenever you need it.
