InterCall Technology, Inc., has an excellent team of software engineers that can solve the toughest problems for using GSM modems to send short messages. Such problems include the data bit difference between Chinese and Latin words and multi-GSM modem failures.

The most popular system used for this purpose is SMS (Short Message System), which is now in general use in many different markets. For example, department stores and shopping malls use SMS to send messages about discounts to their customers. The messages are sent directly to a customer's GSM mobile phone, providing a service that is cheaper and more effective than DM marketing.

InterCall has developed software that can be used to edit messages, create and store a user's database, and set the frequency with which message are sent. The system lets you view records and see if a customer's data should be removed. InterCall uses Wavecom's GSM modem, but they combine four modems in one box. Users simply use 4 SIM cards, which when plugged into the GSM modem allows them to send messages right away.

The transmission quality of a GSM modem depends greatly on the structure of the building in which the modem is housed. InterCall originally used MOXA multiport cards installed on a server's motherboard to connect to a GSM modem. The problem with this setup is that it limits the choice of sites for the system, since the server and modem must be placed in the same location. If the GSM modem cannot receive a good quality signal, the service will not be effective.

It is not advisable, however, for the PC/Server to be located outside of the operating center. This means that finding a good place to put the GSM modem is a major concern. To get around this problem, MOXA's NPort Server Lite was installed together with the GSM modem, with NPort Server Lite's UTP Ethernet port accessible from the box's exterior. It also looks much better than before (the box has four DB9 RS-232 interfaces on the outside). Customers only need to install NPort Server Lite's driver in their system, after which they can use the product remotely and without any change in the operating procedure. They can also place the box anywhere they wish, but leave the PC/server in the operating center.

"It's good to have an NPort Server Lite inside," said Mr. Chin Fon Lu, the CEO of InterCall Technology, Inc. "We don't have to change any programs, and upgraded our product immediately. Besides, it is very stable. After a long time burn-in test, NPort Server Lite still works; I am amazed by MOXA's quality and technology. The cost is less than we expected, especially since our customers can get more benefit from our products."

Overall Benefits:

Serial COM software does not need to be changed, allowing a quick transition to serial over Ethernet data transmission.
