Rising manmade CO2 emissions have made global warming an increasingly urgent issue. As a result, renewable energy has become more and more important with wind power emerging as the most environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient systems todate.

Wind farms are usually located in harsh environments with extreme temperatures (for example, offshore temperatures may fall below -10°C), excessive dust, and vibration. Networking products used in these applications require industrial-grade durability in order to withstand such conditions. Communication between wind turbine towers is another major issue since wind farms typically span vast distances that may go on for miles. Wind turbines are also prone to electrical interference so highly reliable anti-interference capabilities are also required to prevent unstable transmissions and data loss. Given these circumstances, it is essential for wind farms to employ rugged networking devices with long distance transmission capability for remote monitoring in harsh environments.

System Requirements

 

System Description
Each wind turbine tower has a control box containing a PLC, power inverter, control board, and I/O device at the top. Sensors for wind speed, wind direction, shaft rotation speed, and numerous other factors collect and transfer data to the PLC. By detecting the wind's direction, the control system can use a motorized yaw gear to turn the entire wind turbine in the proper wind direction for maximum power generation. All wind turbines are connected to a Local Area Network, with each wind tower's control box using Ethernet to link to the base of the tower where a fiber-based, redundant ring LAN connection is available. The LAN is connected to a remote control station running the SCADA and control systems that analyze collected data, adjust turbine settings, and provide intelligent alarm capability to operations and maintenance personnel.

For each wind turbine tower, Moxa's EDS-300 series unmanaged Ethernet switch converts the copper Ethernet medium used in the control box for optical fiber transmission. The base of the wind turbine tower employs EDS-408A 3FO managed Ethernet switches that are designed with a slim form factor and three fiber ports to connect widely dispersed wind turbines, using the third fiber port to uplink to the tower control box.

Moxa's  EDS-408A 3FO series managed Ethernet switches provide long distance fiber transmission for wind farm networks spread across vast distances. Managed or unmanaged models may be used depending on whether a redundant layout is required. The EDS-408A 3FO managed Ethernet switch can also provide network redundancy with Moxa's Turbo Ring topology to save additional cabling costs. All Moxa products feature long MTBF, high reliability, EMI immunity, DNV certification, and wide operating temperature to ensure stable wind farm operations on land or at sea.
