Background
Variable message signs (VMS) in an intelligent transportation system (ITS) provide drivers with updates about traffic conditions, accidents, road closures, construction delays, speed limits, and other pertinent traffic information. The VMS use LED display boards to show warning messages and are spread across an entire freeway system, spanning long distances. Installing and maintaining a wired solution to connect all these LED display boards along a vast transportation network can be costly and very time consuming.

‧Automatic and constant cellular connectivity for legacy LED panels
‧High-speed cellular networking
‧TCP/IP communication between the control center and LED panels

 

Solution Description
The variable message signs are controlled by a small PLC that need to be connected to a modem in order to receive data, such as warning messages, over a cellular network. The OnCell G3110-HSDPA and G3150-HSDPA cellular IP modems allow non-stop connectivity between the serial interface VMS and 3G high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA) networks. These modems are also capable of sending data via TCP/IP stacks.
